Offshore Wind Farm

A durable LED lighting upgrade for an offshore wind farm substation delivered a 66% energy saving, low‑glare illumination and full HSE compliance, supported by intelligent wireless controls for safe, efficient operation in extreme marine conditions.

Delivery of light where needed, while ensuring design of the fitting and diffuser to reduce glare levels, aiding the engineers with unobtrusive lighting and met the HSE guidance.

Background

The 8,000-tonne substation, located 89 km off the coast of North East England, required lighting capable of withstanding harsh offshore conditions.
To meet efficiency and sustainability goals, while delivering 500 LUX for maintenance work, a carefully designed LED lighting system was developed.

Work undertaken

224 of our GRP dustproof luminaires were used. Ideally suited, they provide a 66.26% reduction in energy consumption compared to a fluorescent alternatives.
Robust and durable, the IP65 fixture is suitable for a range of industrial and commercial applications, like in this case, where protection against water, dust ingress and light impact is critical.

Insights

Fittings were installed and achieved spec for both average and minimum light levels.
Integrated with our intuitive and intelligent wireless controlling system, we supplied daylight regulation, presence detection and remote-controlled programming with centralised reporting for emergency testing, fault reporting and energy monitoring amongst many other features.
